Why do we “celebrate” World Continence Week the last week in June each year?

Celebrate may not be the correct term to use but World Continence Week is promoted globally to raise awareness about a condition that affects millions of people around the world. The week is about promoting bladder and bowel health and educating people about incontinence.

Incontinence, both urinary and fecal, is a common condition that can affect people of any age, gender, and background, and can significantly impact one’s quality of life. At ActivKare we speak daily to individuals experiencing incontinence and often they feel embarrassed, ashamed, or isolated. Many people reach out to us after years of avoiding social situations, exercise, or travel and we’ve helped them to overcome their fears by providing better product options.

By promoting World Continence Week each year, healthcare organizations, advocacy groups, individuals, and companies like ActivKare, can help reduce the stigma surrounding incontinence. We always encourage people to seek help and support about the many treatment options available on the market.

Managing incontinence can be costly and the expenses related to purchasing absorbent products, medical consultations and treatment for associated health complications can make it challenging for individuals and families to afford necessary products or interventions. In many cases these products can be reimbursed by provincial, state, federal and private insurance, but you have to advocate for it.

Low-income individuals and people in 2nd and 3rd world countries may have the most limited access to healthcare facilities and specialized services for incontinence treatment and management. Diagnosis and treatment can be a struggle and access to affordable medication, supplies like adult diapers and pads and/or assistive devices can further add to these challenges.

Incontinence can also carry a social stigma which can lead to isolation and be more pronounced in certain cultures. Not only can individuals feel embarrassed and ashamed, but it can also lead to isolation and withdrawal from community activities and reduced participation in work and education.

At ActivKare our customer care specialists are empathetic and compassionate to individuals struggling with incontinence. We’re helping to promote World Continence Week June 19th to 23rd 2023 by raising awareness about urinary and fecal incontinence, helping to destigmatize issues related to incontinence and to provide a safe space for individuals to call or visit us to discuss the best product options for their needs.

Please reach out if you or a family member is struggling with incontinence.
